Do you always recommend a rewrite?

No, and we are suspicious of anyone who does. A rewrite means months of paying for no visible improvement, and it is rarely necessary. Most systems we are handed can be stabilised and improved in place. If a rewrite genuinely is the cheaper path, we will say so and explain why in plain terms.

The person who built it has gone. Is that a problem?

It is very common, and no. We do not need the original developer. We do need access to the code and the accounts it runs on, and if you are not sure what you have, we will help you work that out.

How bad is too bad?

Very little is beyond saving. We have taken over systems the previous team described as hopeless and had them stable within weeks. The state of the code is our problem to deal with, not something you should feel embarrassed about.
